About Tanzania - The Singida Region

About Tanzania Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Singida Region is one of the poorest in poor Tanzania. The area is very stony, a semi-desert. People live at or below subsistence level. In the past and now bush is cleared to make way for essential fields of maize, beans and millets, which supply the staple food.

Difficulties in the Singida Region

The rainy season is short and tropical downpours tend to wash away the top-soil. Roads become mud-beds and are often impassable. Maintenance of roads is poor. Bridges are frequently swept away.

The dry season can last seven months or more. The ripening of the crops depends on a precarious balance of rain and sunshine. For most months the area looks like a semi-desert. Hunger is never far away.
